How did we get here?
Our Story
During the pandemic, I started driving for two rideshare companies. I’m an RN Case Manager for a large insurance company and worked from home, so I enjoyed talking to passengers and driving around town. I never planned to drive at night, but my curiosity got the best of me and one night I gave it a try. What I found were women who were happy to see a woman coming to pick them up in the middle of the night. There were many reasons they were out there and I made my decision to take one for the team and be there for however many women I could get to their destinations.
While driving with my female passengers, they would tell me stories of drivers they would run across or experiences they had. Some of them were frightening. I was often asked if I could pick them up and return them home, but that isn’t the nature of the companies I worked for. I’d also heard about populations whose religions didn’t allow them to ride with men who weren’t family members and that limited their options for transportation.
There were things ladies did to keep themselves safe, like putting a male version of their name so they wouldn’t be plotted on before they showed up at the ride or making their address close to their home but not putting the actual address. I was asked so many times why women couldn’t choose to have other women pick them up that I looked into it. There are challenges, but we determined that having a private, membership-only club was the way to go. So here we are building a community where we can feel safer and more comfortable while having an alternative to typical rideshare options.
I’m looking forward to building this sisterhood of safety and allowing the members and the driving members one less thing to worry about.
